Federal CARES Act – Emergency Financial Aid Grants

  • Acknowledgment

Sofia University certifies that the institution has signed and returned the Department the Certification and Agreement and that we intend to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

 

  • The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

 Sofia University received $8,151 in Emergency Financial Aid Grant for students.  The university will add its portion to this amount bringing the total to over $16,000 available to help students. Additionally, Sofia University was able to re-direct previously awarded funds to help students in the Winter and Spring quarters in the sum of $27,250.  In addition to this amount, the university used its own resources to award $250 to each international student.

 

  • The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (of the latest report available).

Sofia University has awarded $15,008 as of January 8, 2021.

  • The estimated total number of students at the institution who are or could be eligible to participate in the Federal student financial aid programs under  Section 484  of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended,  and thus are eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

An email to apply was sent to all 210 eligible students of the university, wherein 33 students applied for the Emergency Financial Aid grant.

  • The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

 Sofia University awarded the Emergency Financial Aid Grant to 32 students. 

  • The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

The Grant application process is open to all eligible students. Students must have filed a FAFSA and submit a university application form along with an essay documenting financial need due to COVID-19 by October 15, 2020, to be considered.

  •  Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.

Sofia University’s goal is to help students as much as possible. As such, we have crafted a simple application process with clear instructions already sent out to all students.  Of course, students are encouraged to use funds to help in areas that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as updating the internet connection to ensure coverage for zoom classes.
