We are authorized to deliver a transformational learning experience online.
Sofia University is authorized to deliver online education to students in the following states or territories listed below. If you live in a state or territory that is not listed, please contact our Office of Admissions by emailing admissions@sofia.edu or calling 888.820.1484 for more information.
State Authorization
The US Department of Education requires institutions that offer online or distance learning programs to be authorized by each state in which the institution enrolls students, when such authorization is mandated by the state.
Sofia University is actively working to meet state authorization requirements, which includes obtaining and maintaining approval or exemption status for our online programs in other states. While Sofia would like to make its online programs available to students nationwide, certain state regulations currently prevent us from doing so. Sofia University regularly monitors state regulations and may revise the list of approvals or exemptions below.
California’s Relationship to SARA
The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) were established in 2013 by higher education stakeholders—including state regulators, education leaders, accreditors, the U.S. Department of Education, and participating institutions—to simplify and standardize the regulatory requirements for distance education programs offered across state lines. California is the only state that has not joined SARA. As a result, institutions based in California, such as Sofia, are not eligible to participate in these reciprocity agreements and must instead adhere to the individual authorization requirements of each state in which they seek to enroll students.

Sofia University can enroll online or distance education students in the following states or US territories listed below. This list only applies to education programs that do not require clinical/practicum experience, unless otherwise indicated.

Notice to Current Students Who Relocate
Current students enrolled in Sofia online programs must be cautious when relocating within the US. If you relocate to a state in which Sofia does not have authorization to offer our programs, you may lose eligibility to remain enrolled and/or receive federal financial aid for their course of studies at Sofia. Prospective students who have not yet enrolled should consider this regulation prior to applying, especially if there is a possibility of relocating to a restricted state prior to program completion. It is the responsibility of the student to report their new residential address to Sofia University immediately after relocation.
