Commencement 2019

Sofia University is excited to announce the 2019 commencement ceremony, along with this year’s theme: Different Paths, One Humanity. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 22,  2019, at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Congratulations to all of our upcoming graduates, we look forward to celebrating your academic achievements.

What time should students arrive?

Students should plan to arrive at 8 a.m.

What time does the commencement ceremony start?

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Where do students pick up their cap and gown?

All Sofia students should arrive in their cap and gown and should have received them prior to commencement day. MBAO students will pick up gowns at Sofia University’s front desk on Thursday (6/20), and Friday (6/21), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Is there rehearsal for Commencement?

A quick rehearsal by program begins promptly at 8:30 a.m.

How many guests may I invite?

Sofia students are allotted up to 5 guest tickets. If additional guest tickets are needed, please feel free to contact the office of student services.

How can I make sure my name is pronounced correctly?

All Sofia readers sincerely desire to pronounce graduates names correctly and practice with a list of grads’ names in advance. To ensure that Sofia has this information, contact the department office of student affairs and provide them with a phonetic pronunciation of your name well in advance of Commencement. You may also write the phonetic pronunciation of your name on your grad card (which will be filled out as you check in on commencement day) to assist the reader.

Will photos be taken during commencement?

Sofia’s hired professional photographer will be on site from 8:30 a.m. through the duration of the ceremony, as well as following. Family and guests are not allowed near the stage during the ceremony to take photos. Guests are encouraged to remain in their seats during the duration of the ceremony.

Will a reception follow commencement?

Yes, following the commencement ceremony a reception will follow in the lobby. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

How early can guests arrive to reserve seats?

We recommend all guests plan accordingly and arrive at the museum with time to navigate parking and get to the venue prior to the ceremony starting at 10:30 am.

The doors to the Hahn building will open to guests promptly at 9 am. Guests will need to present their tickets prior to being granted access.

What if I lost my ticket?

Students should ensure their guests print their tickets or hold onto their tickets on their phone. All tickets will be emailed to students via their email.

Do you provide accomodations for guests with special needs?

Yes, we provide accomodations for guests with special needs, however needs to be contacted in advance.

How do we line up for the Procession?

For the procession, you will line up by degree and then by program. For example, Bachelors, then Master’s. The Doctorate graduates will be on the stage with the faculty and staff.
