K-12 teachers and education professionals, are you seeking to develop yourself personally and professionally while developing the vision to serve your students? If that’s your goal, then the residential Master of Education in Transformational Arts (META) may be for you.

Many teachers enter the profession wishing to touch the heart of the learner only to find that their training and the demands of the system limit their effectiveness. Their dreams and visions are soon dashed and they leave teaching, echoing the refrain, "If only there was a way to change the educational experience, then I could have really engaged my students." We have addressed these shortcomings by developing a holistic curriculum that empowers the teacher and offers strategies for change.

Learning is life - not preparation for it. Transformational learning includes commitment to continual self-development and growth. Our goal is Self-actualization and transcendence,supporting people to be the most that they can be in a safe, supportive environment.

The process emphasizes personal as well as professional development, effectiveness in groups, methodologies for creating a learning community, pathways to inner wisdom through an array of seminars, and ways to apply what is being learned in the service of one's teaching. What is more, you do this while actively developing a rich inner life. And, of course, the teacher-learner will gain professional standing and salary advancement through completion of this accredited Master's Degree program.

TRANSFORMATIVE, HOLISTIC EDUCATION FOR ALL

We teach practical hands-on techniques, strategies and holistic learning methods that can be used immediately in your classroom. Our program provides tools to promote student communication, curiosity, emotional intelligence, self-awareness and self-esteem. We promote service to the community and creation of a better, more human world.

As teachers we must have a vision for a sustainable future if we are to be role models for our students. We can help our students create their own visions. The world we wish to create requires continual development of our collective visions.

COURSEWORK FOR THE PRACTICING EDUCATOR

Courses include Jungian Child Psychology, Social-Emotional Learning, Pedagogies of the Spirit, Creative Expression for the Classroom, and a year-long Transformative Learning Capstone Project

The Master of Education in Transformational Arts program offers you:

  • A conscious and intentional awareness of emotional intelligence held within students and teachers

  • Flexible schedules- onsite with retreat week

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • 18 total course units
    • 14 META courses
    • 4 Transpersonal courses
  • Seven 10 week quarters (2 years including summer)
  • 7 units per quarter plus 2 5-day residential seminars each Summer
  • One evening a week plus two 4-hour weekend intensives each quarter

Core Courses

META 2001/3001 – Residential Seminar Series I & II—META Staff
These are 5 day residential programs held in mid-August to build a sense of community among META students. They will include guest presentations by pioneers in transformative arts in K-12 education, including Eco-Psychology and Jungian group dream work. We will also focus on the highly successful TOOLBOX approach to Socio-Emotional development. TOOLBOX

TOOLBOX is a K-6 program that supports children in understanding and managing their own emotional, social, and academic success. Through its simple and profound metaphor of Tools, TOOLBOX brings forward a set of 12 skills and practices that help students access their own inner resilience.

META 2010 – Whole Person Approaches to Developing Learning Communities—Bacon
This course explores a variety of creative, student centered approaches to teaching, including the organic development of a cooperative, student-centered classroom. We will emphasize awareness, empathy, group decision-making, goal setting, and using the world as a classroom. Transpersonal tools will include guided imagery, mindfulness and metaphor. The primary focus will be on student empowerment and team-building leading to creation of a better world.

META 2020 – Group Process and Transformational Growth—TBA
Group process refers to the ways people behave in group situations. The course provides an experiential and theoretical introduction to group dynamics and its applications to creating cooperative classrooms. The course trains teachers as transformative group facilitators.

META 2030 – Psychosynthesis: Archetypes of the Soul — Bacon
Psychosynthesis concerns itself first and foremost with a consideration of meaning, purpose and values in the individual‘s life. Psychosynthesis provides an inclusive image of humanity, one that integrates spiritual and psychological elements and provides a theoretical foundation for transformative education along with practical techniques, such as the use of guided imagery, for the classroom.

META 2040/3040 – Topical Seminars I & II — META Staff & Guest Lecturers
This series of seminars by guest presenters is designed to enrich the curriculum and to inspire our students. Topics include dreams, diversity, and transformative communication.

META 2050 – Human Development for Educators — Olsen
This course provides an introduction to a variety of approaches to human development, including Erikson’s psycho-social theory, Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, Fowler’s stages of faith, and transformative approaches to human development that include spiritual development.

META 3010 – Child Psychology: A Transpersonal and Jungian Approach — Herrmann
This course includes both developmental challenges in childhood and also the spiritual experiences and values that are often overlooked in children. Topics include factors that facilitate the unfolding of the child’s innate potential, healthy sense of self and capacity to function in the world.

META 3020/3021/3022 – Capstone Project I, II & III — Elfers
Capstone I includes training in action research designed to prepare students to conduct their Capstone Projects, applications of transformative education in the classroom. Capstone II focuses on carrying out the research projects, and Capstone III consists of presentations and discussions of each student’s project.

META 3030 – Creative Expression in Transformative Education — Olsen
This course discusses theories and practices for understanding and enhancing creativity, based on the fundamental premise that all individuals are essentially creative, inventive, and imaginative. This course will encourage teachers to enhance their own creative capacities and to foster their students’ creativity.

META 2050 – Facilitating Learning Communities — Bacon
This class focuses on classroom applications of the dynamics of developing learning communities using organizational development training as well as transpersonal methodologies. It is based on Dr. Bacon’s 30 years of successful facilitation of a transformative program within a traditional San Francisco Bay Area public high school.

META 3060 – Transformational Approaches to Core Curriculum — MacDonald
The course explores how to use the challenges of teaching core curriculum to provide transformative experiences to students.

META 3070 – Pedagogies of the Spirit — Olsen
This course discusses the pedagogies and educational applications of a variety of holistic and spiritually oriented education systems including the theories and practices of the Montessori and Waldorf schools.
