About Dr. Jill Mellick
by Susan O’Connell, MTP, REACE
Director of Creative Expression Certificate.
This award was established in honor of Professor Emerita Jill Mellick, Ph.D., a gifted artist, writer, educator and therapist whose work greatly influenced, and continues to influence, the role that creative expression plays in health, wellness and culture particularly in the fields of Transpersonal and Jungian psychology.
Dr. Mellick founded the creative expression program at The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now the school of psychology at Sofia University) and her philosophy is still integrated in the coursework today. She was also a founding member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA). Her dedication to creative process is exemplary and reflected in her generative life and many published works.
As a student at Sofia University, I was introduced to the exemplary work of Jill Mellick through Sofia’s creativity focused courses. In particular, Jill Mellick’s (2003) book titled, The art of dreaming: A creativity toolbox for dreamers; a required reading in the experiential course titled Transpersonal Approaches to Creative Expression, made a significant impression guiding me to focus my studies (and later faculty work) on creative expression and the creativity of earth.
Jill’s lived experience as a creator, educator, therapist and soul companion sings through her written words and creative expression. She invites each student onto a unique path of imagination, creativity and authenticity that is expansive, generative, and healing. I am deeply grateful for Jill’s contributions to the field of creative expression, and to the world at large.
