For over 40 years the experiences and education we have offered our students have transformed them and thereby countless clients and others with whom they live and work.

Sofia University is pleased to offer scholarships to support entering and continuing students who can demonstrate financial need, will contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the transpersonal community, and possess high potential to thrive within the Sofia community. Scholarships can be combined with financial aid, depending upon eligibility.

Since July 1st, 2014, we have given the following amount of scholarships:

  • Through the Sofia University Fund: $170, 158.00
  • Through the ITP Foundation Restricted Fund: $21,000.00

Moving Humanity Forward

We believe that every student who enrolls at Sofia University has the ability to be a ripple in the wave of humanity’s evolution. This scholarship asks you to consider your own personal contribution to this amazing effort. Whether you see yourself as a ripple within your own personal home community, within a larger organization, or as an international change maker, we would like to know how you envision your education at Sofia University will help you move humanity forward.

The Moving Humanity Forward Scholarship is for students new to the University who have never attended before. It is awarded quarterly to the top 10 winning applicants. Students from all four schools of learning are encouraged to apply.

Award amount:  $2000 for the first (4) quarters of enrollment which will be a $500 credit for each quarter.

Eligibility: Applicants must be new students who have never attended Sofia University or ITP in the past, enrolling in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral program. Domestic and international students may apply.

Scholarship Details

This scholarship has no cash value which means that it cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash. In addition, this scholarship cannot be transferred to another school or be used by another student. Only the scholarship recipient can use the tuition credit which is applied to the student’s 1st four quarters of study at the University. Sofia University retains the right to terminate this offer at any time for any reason.

Winner Responsibilities and Obligations

Winning essays are the property of the university and some content may be featured in university advertising such as website features, blogs, social media outlets, etc. for promotional purposes. Winners may be asked to represent the school as ambassadors for the university in their first year, sharing their experiences with prospective students by phone or email, or through attendance at Sofia sponsored events. Suggested hours for giving back each quarter will be no less than 5 and no more than 10 hours.

President’s Diversity Scholarship

The President’s Diversity Scholarship is a need-based scholarship which supports cultural and economic diversity among the Sofia student community. The scholarship helps new incoming students and continuing full-time students meet the costs of education.

Award amount: The amount will be from $1000 to $5000 each year and will be determine by the scholarship committee.

Deadline: June 1

Eligibility: Incoming students who have been accepted into a university program or continuing full-time students. The awards are need-based with an emphasis on cultural and economic diversity in the student body.

Award Disbursement: Each application will be considered on an individual basis by the scholarship committee. Students will be notified of the committee’s decision in writing by July 15.

Receipt of Aid:  Scholarships are awarded as tuition reduction in equal installments, three (3) for Residential and four (4) for Global.  No cash award will be made.  If a student elect to withdraw from the program, take a quarter off or take a Leave of Absent, in an Academic Calendar Year, the remaining scholarship award/s will be considered forfeited.

Tom Potterfield Diversity Scholarship Fund

The Tom Potterfield Diversity Scholarship Fund keeps alive the memory of Tom Potterfield, Sofia University’s beloved president, while helping promising students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds attend Sofia University. This scholarship is for students who have been accepted into a doctoral program, who make a two-year service commitment to utilizing their Sofia University education to make a difference in their community, and demonstrate a financial need.

Award amount: The amount will be from $1500 to $7500 each year and will be determine by the scholarship committee.

Deadline: Early consideration for applications submitted by June 1.  Applications received after that date will be given consideration on a funds availability basis.

Renewable: Renewable for up to 3 additional years (total of four) based on their academic progress, continued commitment to serving their community, participation in the Sofia community, and availability of funds.

Eligibility: Students who have been accepted into a doctoral program, a two-year service commitment to utilizing their Sofia University education to make a difference in their community, and demonstrated financial need.

James Fadiman Dissertation Support Fund

This scholarship was established by donors who wished to honor James Fadiman’s contributions to Sofia University and its students. The support fund helps doctoral students who are in the dissertation phase whose work meets a specific set of criteria – with research costs.

Deadline: Applications accepted year round

Eligibility: Funds are to be used to support doctoral student research costs in the dissertation phase whose work meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Pragmatic research with potential practical outcomes
  • Studies that create or validate a new way of working, a new way to do therapy, coaching, teaching or training
  • Dissertations that break out of the medical model for therapy rather than perpetuate it; or
  • Dissertations on altered states of consciousness, especially those involved with entheogens (psychedelics)

Larissa Keet Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Larissa Keet Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to keep alive the memory of Sofia University alumna, Larissa Keet, and to provide financial support to current Sofia University students who demonstrate commitment to the causes to which Larissa dedicated her life.

Eligibility: Scholarly excellence and demonstrated present commitment to serving organizations dedicated to social justice, peace, women’s rights and/or environmental causes. Not necessarily need based. Good academic standing.

Award Disbursement: Each application will be considered on an individual basis by the scholarship committee. Students will be notified of the committee’s decision in writing by July 15.

Receipt of Aid:  Scholarships are awarded as tuition reduction in equal installments, three (3) for Residential and four (4) for Global.  No cash award will be made.  If a student elect to withdraw from the program, take a quarter off or take a Leave of Absent, in an Academic Calendar Year, the remaining scholarship award/s will be considered forfeited.

  • Fill out the Student Aid Report (FAFSA) or Income Verification Form (International Students)
  • Submit your completed Supplemental Income Verification Form
  • Provide a list of organizations served including capacity (staff, volunteer, etc.), supervisor/contact name and phone number. Applicant must have a track record of social action.
  • Write a short paper explaining how the applicant intends to use his or her education and degree from Sofia University to advance one or more of the causes championed by Larissa and listed above. *The scholarship committee will consider the papers in determining the scholarship awards. Applicants agree that the content of their papers can be used for advertising and promotional purposes.

*It is recommended that students repay the amount back to the scholarship fund upon completion of their degree, but repayment is not mandatory.

Provost’s Scholarship for Undergraduate Studies

The Provost’s Scholarship for Undergraduate Studies assists entering students who can demonstrate financial need and possess a high potential to thrive within the Sofia community. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students in meeting the costs of education.

Eligibility: Applicants must be accepted into a full-time Sofia University undergraduate program, demonstrate financial need, and possess a high potential to thrive within the Sofia community.

Receipt of Aid:  Scholarships are awarded as tuition reduction into four (4) equal installments.  No cash award will be made.  If a student elect to withdraw from the program, take a quarter off or take a Leave of Absent, in an Academic Calendar Year, the remaining scholarship award/s will be considered forfeited.

No applicant will be given preferential information or treatment by members of the Board of Trustees or the staff of Sofia University. All applicants will receive the same information about the scholarship and how to fill out the application.

Disbursement of Awards: Applicants will be notified in writing of the fund committee’s decision no more than 90 days after their application is received. All awards  listed above, except the Moving Humanity Forward scholarship, are in the form of cash awards given directly to the student. No money is to be used for tuition reduction or direct compensation to the student. All monies are to be applied to actual incurred research related expenses that my include travel, room and board in exceptional cases.

Application Files: Once submitted, application/letter/documentation becomes the property of Sofia University. The items will be kept on file for two years after submission. After this time they will be destroyed. The documents and the fund committee’s ratings are confidential and will not be released to anyone – including applicants.

Scholarship Search: Sofia University recommends against using any scholarship search service which charges a fee. It is our experience that these services generally do not provide any information which was not accessible to the student using other free resources.
