Poet and LGBTQ Activist Judy Grahn Releases New Memoir
A Simple Revolution reflects on women’s and gay rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s
Palo Alto – December 2012 – Internationally acclaimed poet and Sofia University professor, Judy Grahn, has written a memoir titled, A Simple Revolution – The Making of an Activist Poet.
Grahn has previously written twelve books and poetry collections, including Blood, Bread, and Roses – How Menstruation Created the World, and Another Mother Tongue – Gay Words, Gay Worlds. She currently co-directs and teaches in the Women’s Spirituality program at Sofia University in Palo Alto.
A Simple Revolution is Judy’s first memoir and tells her life story from the age of eight to the age of forty. Widely recognized as one of the most iconic figures of the gay women’s liberation movement, Grahn’s memoir reflects on women’s and gay rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Particularly intriguing is her involvement with iconic figures and movements in history, such as the Black Panthers, the imprisoned Manson women, and Inez Garcia. Her perspective changes and she serves sometimes as witness, sometimes as participant, sometimes as instigator.
Grahn discusses institutions she and her colleagues developed, including the Women’s Press Collective, Oakland Feminist Women’s Health Center, and A Woman’s Place Bookstore. She encourages new ways of living, including collective feminist households that cut through the political and social isolation of women.
