Creative Expression at Sofia University
Creativity, and creative expression, is at the core of the Sofia University curriculum. Creativity, along with intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational aspects of human existence, comprises our unique experiential educational model that addresses the whole person.
What is Creative Expression?
Dr. Jill Mellick, founder of the Creative Expression Specialization at Sofia U, calls creative expression, “the arts used in service of the soul.” At Sofia U, we recognize that all people are born with the capacity to make music, dance, write, and paint, as well as have other ways to express their experience. Images, both verbal and non-verbal, call to us through our sensing bodies and we pay attention to them through the arts. Developing openness to the poetry of our lives is fundamental to optimal spiritual, physical and psychological wellness and growth. Sofia University identifies the long tradition in every culture that the arts are necessary for human evolution and offers the Creative Expression Specialization to students who wish to follow an artful path through their studies.
The Creative Expression Specialization at Sofia can be integrated into M.A., Psy.D. and Ph.D. degrees, and is directed by Dr. Lisa Herman, a registered expressive arts therapist. In addition to coursework, personal art practice and practicum opportunities, there are research possibilities to demonstrate the usefulness of creative expression in personal and collective healing, as well as social action projects. This specialization affords students the opportunity to move through all their studies preserving an artful, inquiring presence.
