How long is the admissions process for international students?

The application process differs from program to program. Admissions process should normally take 1-2 weeks depending on the program.

For First-time International students:

It will take 3-5 business days to process the application and complete the I-20, providing all the admissions requirements are met. Please allow up to 3-7 business days for shipping after the completion of the documents. First-time international applications are for prospective students who are going to apply with a U.S. Embassy or Consulate for F-1 VISA status approval.

For Change of Status students:

It will take 3-5 business days to process the application and complete the I-20. Please allow up to 3-7 business days for shipping after the completion of the documents. Change of Status applicants is for prospective students or current students who are currently Nonresident Aliens and would like to apply for F-1 VISA status within the U.S.

Change of status process: Students must submit an application to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for a change of status. This process may take up to six months.

For Transfer students:

After receiving your acceptance letter and transfer form from your prospective school, please follow the transfer out policy and submit all documents to DSO in order for your SEVIS record to be released.

What is the procedure to transfer between Sofia and another university?

Transfer In:

After applying to Sofia once you have been accepted you should receive two documents by e-mail to the e-mail address given on your application form.

(1)  SOFIA’s Acceptance Letter

(2)  Transfer Eligibility Form.

Both of these documents should be submitted to your current school so that your SEVIS record can be released and transferred over to Sofia.

Transfer Out:

What are the minimum credits necessary to maintain a F1 status?

For Undergraduate Degrees = 12 units

For Graduate Degrees = 7 units

What is the process for I-20 deferment?

To defer a SEVIS I-20 form to the next semester, please follow the defer policy as soon as you know that you will need your I-20 to be deferred.

Before we can issue a new I-20, you will need to be processed and reviewed once again by the admissions office. In the meantime, if you attend any schools in your home country, please make sure to send us any updated documents for our records. Should your address change, please send us your new address and phone number.

Quarter Break Policy

  • For new Abroad, Changing of Status or Transfer In students who has studied in the US for less than 30 weeks prior is allowed to take annual break in the 4th quarter in the 1st year at Sofia University and in the 3rd quarter in the next year.
  • For new Transfer In student or current student who has studied in the US for at least 30 weeks prior is allowed to take annual break in the 3rd quarter from the 1st year.
  • Must pay annual break fee.
  • Have no current balance.
  • Must provide the bank statement that enough to cover all expenses for 1 quarter.

Curricular Practical Training Definition

“Curricular Practical Training” (CPT) is an authorized period of employment that is an integral or important part of a student’s curriculum. At Sofia University, there are two scenarios that qualify students for CPT:

  • The internship must be a requirement of the Degree program. In this case, you may or may not receive academic credit. The CPT endorsement must be issued by the chair and DSO during the same quarter as the internship period.
  • In cases where the practical internship is not a requirement, the department must offer a CPT course for which the student receives academic credit. The CPT course must be offered during the same quarter as the internship period. Failure to enroll in and complete the class will result in immediate violation of your legal status. It is the student’s responsibility to fulfill all requirements of CPT.

How do I submit a Travel or Quarter Break Request?

  • Must fill out the annual vacation request form and submit to DSO by orientation date
  • Not eligible for PhD Residential, MATP Residential, PSYD students.

What do I do if my SEVIS gets terminated?

If you have been terminated for failure to maintain your status students are eligible to apply for Reinstatement OR transfer to a different University who is willing to provide the student with the Reinstatement process. Can a student study being on H1/H4?

Yes, you will need to provide valid visas and get the registrar, Mrs. Ampalika Wong (Ampalika.Wong@sofia.edu), approval.

What are the documents required by the VISA consulate for a F2 Visa?
